I wish that newly acquired media freedom, and now independent judiciary (which is giving decisions against current govts) would also remain fair once the next leader comes in. I just want people to respect Musharraf for what he has done because I know he has done a lot for Pakistan. I have seen Pakistan improving economically and socially in front of my eyes. How can someone lie about Musharraf's achivements. Anyway lets hope for the best!

Americans like Bhutto as well. It's too bad though that some new blood can't emerge, instead of rehashing the same old people. But in America we have the same problem; there's talk of alternating Bush and Clinton dynasties, which is just as unfortunate.

My wish is that yes we move towards democracy as we have to because Musharraf cannot be there forever. Sooner or later he has to go and someone else has to come back BUT still I want him to remain in some shape or form to check on their activities for sometime at least so that we don't have to go back to days of bankrupcy, mr 10%, low salaries, high taxes, etc. In that scenario i think bhutto is better as i like her views. Nawaz is too close with extremist parties.

Don't get me wrong. Musharraf will be missed by America. He been good for Pakistan, but for many other nations as well. His ability to communicate & cooperate with the world community has been greatly appreciated. He has been good for Afghanistan, who's always had a difficult time managing, and India, quelling longstanding tensions. Most Americans will miss his help, only wishing he could've done more in Waziristan.

I understand. The vote of the common man can be & is manipulated in America as well, meanwhile the politicians often are looking out for their own best interests or those of their contributers more than their actual constituents.

Why didn't we see media freedom (100 channels), independent judicary, women's and minority rights, improved economy under 10 years of democratic rule? Now current setup is not exactly democratic either but the good thing is that we have educated and good character people in musharraf and shuakat aziz (an ecomomist himself). Add this to prospects of another feudalistic democracy.

It is the "will of the people" part that is controversial. Basically, we have a same group of people who are feudals/land lords/tribal leaders who are elected again and again because the population there is too naive or uneducated to understand the politcis/economy etc. They are more interested in their daily life. Now they get used in a way as the people they elect are interested in money and power.

I appreciate what you're saying. Musharraf has been a mixed bag of contradictions. In many ways he has been very good for Pakistan, which is a difficult place to rule, but at the same time he subverted the will of the people taking power in a military coup. Regardless of all of that, his time as leader is waning and he will have to submit to the will of the people or be no better than your average despot.

Remember that Pakistan is still a majority Feudal/Land lord type society where democracy is NOT THE VOICE OF PEOPLE BUT VOICE OF CHOSEN FEW! Therefore do not equate Pakistani democratic leaders with leaders in real democracies as these are not accountable to their constituients. They can do whaever they want and yet these will be elcted again. Untill we get rid of that system, current system is best.

Musharraf status is very delicate. He has brought those things into Pakistan which politcians are suppose to do like media freedom, women's rights, minority reights, independence of judiciary BUT he has done that as army general not as a democratic leader. On the other hand we have this PM who has a label of democratic leader on him but in reality is worst than a dictator.
