Description:

I was reading interesting online sources about Johann Bessler and Edward Somerset (the Marquis of Worcester) and it seemed to me that their perpetual motion wheels probably relied upon 1) keeping friction down, 2) keeping a bunch of weights off-axis and 3) keeping more weights on one side than on the other. So yesterday, I designed and built this crude gravity wheel from three glued laminations of ¾" plywood, nails for 8 individual axles, several ounces of fishing weights, and clear silicone seal to hold the weights into the 8 drilled-out recesses. When I set this wheel with its 90 degree pivoting weights on the ground, off it rolls! Yeah, it hobbles a little--it was just roughed out with a handheld jigsaw and drill. I wonder why so many people just assume that self-turning wheels are impossible without first trying to build one? --Scott F. Hall, August 7, 2007 To see more of Scott F. This looks a lot like the pictures of the crop circles... Is that where you got the idea? Have you thought about making other designs that use crop circle designs?

That's an interesting reference but it was totally unintentional on my part.

Neat I thought, Can you rig a set of spokes on either side down to a central axle? That would negate any speculation about the floor. The machine could rotate, maybe round a needle roller bearing, and remain stationary at the same time. Keep on... George

Nice! The King's English. I see bumper stickers here these days that say "Welcome to America. Now, speak English." Quite ironic if you think about it...

If it were a children's toy, it might amuse them for about 15 seconds. What other uses have you thoght of?

As an artist, I'm not very concerned about usefulness. I leave that concern to those out there whose minds are more deeply invested in the science and technology paradigm. Alexander Graham Bell felt compelled to turn the tetrahedral kite into an aircraft. I'm quite happy myself just to make the kite, fly the kite, and show the kite to others.

The floor is level. I've checked it with a bubble level. The bubble was dead center. The floor is also flat. But you are funny.
