Description: To see more go to www.vbs.tv Tracking the Filipino band Vampire State to their practice space near the Capitol Parish Church proved a lot simpler than we thought it was going to be. Our concern that the rigidly Catholic doctrine espoused by yet another authoritarian regime masquerading as a democracy in Manila might infringe on the younger generation's freedom of rock-spression was unfounded at best. These kids were fucking amp'd on political punk. Armed with a refreshing call-to-arms vibe that has been sadly hijacked here in the States by panhandling hobos with a couple of Conflict patches and a dog on rope, Vampire State ARE punk. I guess living in a country where a police state actually does exist makes you a bit harder than growing up in a land where getting tattoed and skipping showers at the prep school your mom's putting you through are the showcases of teen rebellion. Anyway, Vampire State took us into their quad-studio practice space and graciously shared their cheap booze while running through a blazing set of hardcore-styled anarchopunk. The name of the band is taken from a Rudimentary Peni song, which in our eyes and ears is a great thing. A four-piece with Kenny on vocals, Mitz on bass, Sami on guitar, and the irrepressible Baboon on the drums, Vampire State operates out of the large punk scene in Cebu City. What a great ride this place was. Everyone was welcoming and the whole area is ripe with character not to mention babes on every corner and in most every band. So if you ever find yourself in the Philippines do yourself a favor and track down Sami or Mitz—just avoid the balut. Eating a fermented chicken or duck fetus (does species really matter at that stage?) on a humid summer night is too much for any tattooed prepster.

It seemed a perfect backdrop for our meeting with a bunch of Black Metal maniacs, so we went straight from the plane to Enslaved's practice space in the basement of the venue for Hole in the Sky (the most hard core Black Metal festival in Norway, and probably the world). Being a timid geek stepping into the lair of a band of mad Black Metallers I felt like I was a four-foot-tall Chinese guy trying to infiltrate the mafia... or something. I didn't feel comfortable, all right? Anyways, Enslaved was just about to go on tour in India and they had also just been nominated for Spellemansprisen (basically, the Norwegian Grammy Awards, in their case for best metal band) so they could only play a couple songs for us. Well, a couple of songs turned into two hours in a tiny room with no earplugs... real smart. They're a great bunch of guys, but they're not Black Metal. They're Extreme Metal, because they weren't into Satanism like most of the bands we'd be meeting in the following ten days. Also it turned out we weren't supposed to have beers in their practice space. Uh, this is supposed to be the extremest music on earth and you're going to kowtow to some rental-space owner's beer rules? Right. So anyway, we snuck some in (Extreme!). www.VBS.tv
