we was happy in the other episodes too, but its when she had to live with her new family. she was taken in by a well known family, whom her sister was in love with. her sister had a relationship with byakuya and she had asked him to take rukia in before she died.

well acutally she stopped being happy once she was let into her nee sama's family it made her different, while she was honored it kinda desentaced her from her friend rengi. She smiles alot when she meets ichigo, for a bit. Shes a complex character thats why her and ichigo make a good match.
