Description: 23.4.2007 - Copenhagen, Denmark - The event was a celebration of the 94th birthday of Copenhagen's famous waterside Little Mermaid statue --based on the fairytale figure created in 1836 by famous Danish author, Hans Christian Andersen As part of the annual celebrations, women clad in bikinis boarded a canal boat and released red and white balloons in the air, the colours of the Danish flag. They then jumped in the water just behind the statue and formed the number '94' in the water. But protesters wearing shark fins with the number '69' soon approached the women on the canal boat and took over the celebrations. The protest was staged by a group of supporters of the Youth House, a famous building in the Noerrebro district of the Danish capital that for years had served as a popular cultural centre for anarchists, punk rockers and left-wing groups, which was demolished by the authorities in March 2007. The Youth House was located on Jagtvej 69. The eviction its former residents in March sparked riots during which at least 170 people were arrested.(metro.co.uk) |
